Blog Deep Dive

She sits at her rather neat desk, her mind stressing over how much reading she needs to complete. It’s broad daylight and she wants to complete this task early in the day so she has nothing left to do during the evening hours. Reading 3 chapters of a textbook in one sitting felt very overwhelming, but she knew it had to be done. She begins to read, pressured to comprehend and remember every single detail in this reading. Her teacher told her that the material in this textbook will be on the exam. All she’s ever wanted is to get exceptional grades, so knowing this information made her force herself to pay attention deeply. As her eyes wonder over every little word she begins to grow tired of reading, wishing she had started earlier to save time. Procrastination is her worst enemy. After what felt like hours she finally finishes, swearing to herself to never procrastinate again.

Something I will do to improve how I approach readings is to split it up over a few days. I find I have more motivation to do assignments if I know I have time. If i can complete a reading little by little I will retain the information more, and not feel overwhelmed to complete it.

I think being “the slowest reader” means to be someone who really slows down and takes their time to digest and understand what they’ve read on a deeper level. When someone reads only to finish books and not to understand them, they tend to only get the main idea of the novel and miss the details. Reading slowly forces the reader to take in the writers formats and details of the piece. That can help the reader to implement some of the techniques they see into their own writing. In this class, reading essays slowly and thoroughly can help grasp some new writing techniques that some have not seen before. This can enhance our writing and diversify the texts we create.

She sits at her table, her iPad in front of her. Her fingertips skim the keyboard waiting for her mind to figure out the first sentence. After the first few words have been put into place, the ideas just pour out of her. She always believed the beginning was the hardest, but after that was done it was smooth sailing from here. That was until she started doubting her vocabulary. She always pondered whether there was a better way of phrasing something, or if there was another word that sounded more professional. Thinking of more sufficient words and sentences alone took up a lot of her time. She tried trusting in what she had already wrote, but couldn’t help but listen to the voice in the back her mind telling her that there’s something better. The Thesaurus was her best friend, helping her find synonyms which better describes what she is trying to say. After finishing the writing, she reads it over and over again making sure it’s perfect and well written. She has always been told she was a great writer, so she wanted to make sure she lived up to that name.

I think I can improve my writing process by studying other authors writing techniques and implementing that into my own writing. I think finding inspiration and examples is very helpful to me. It jump starts my ideas, and makes the flow of my writing process smoother.

The first idea that will help me the most is to ask myself “How can I have the most fun writing this?”. One of the hardest parts of writing an essay for me is to find the motivation to get started. I often think to myself that it’s going to take too long, or that I’d rather do something different. This technique will change the way I look at writing essays. If I find ways to make writing fun I’ll have more motivation, not only to get started but to do my best work. The second idea that will help me as a college student is to jump around, and not force myself to write from beginning to end. When I’m writing essays, I often find myself having great ideas for the body paragraphs or something that will show up later in my essay. I usually force myself to finish the part I was working on, before going to write my idea. Doing this makes me forget some details of my idea. By the time I get to writing it down, it’s no longer fresh in my brain. It also makes me fixate on that idea while trying to write something else. By circling around my topic, I’ll be able to put my ideas into words before the idea is gone.
